Featured Author: Rebecca Lange

Rebecca Lange is a mother of two boys (13 and 15 years old). She has been married to her husband for over 16 years, and is currently living in Germany. She was actually born and raised in Germany but moved to the US after she met her husband in Scotland at a wedding. (That in itself is a super cool and crazy story.)

She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and absolutely loves her Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is fluent in German and English and has challenged herse
lf by writing her books not in her native tongue but English instead.

She enjoys reading clean happy-ending stories, loves watching chick flicks (especially her Christmas Hallmark movie collection), and is a big-time Harry Potter Fan. (She is not kidding on that one. Her house has plenty of decorations of said franchise.)

Her love for writing started early. Even as a child, she enjoyed writing stories. As a teenager, escaping reality took place whenever she had a good book in her fingers, had written her own stories, or watched romantic movies. She has a vivid imagination, so it is easy for her to disappear into a different world. She avoids certain genres because of her imagination, but is still grateful that she can vividly picture things. She is definitely a hopeless romantic but also likes it when the books she writes or reads (or movies she watches) have a bit of everything.

She writes Young Adult Fiction/ Christian Fantasy and Historical Fiction, but her readers will also, find drama, heartbreak, romance, humor, suspense, lots of sarcasm, and sass (a must for her since she is fluent in both), inspirational thoughts, and faith in her books.

She addresses difficult topics people don’t like to talk about because: “Only when we speak about these issues can we make a change.” Bullying, Racism, Sexual Harassment, Abuse, Drug and Alcohol addictions are just some of the topics she tackles straight forward, without sugarcoating. She doesn’t believe in avoiding issues because they are uncomfortable. Her beliefs, views, and opinions on those issues are presented in her books, the way she feels about them. Her characters are her voice. She calls it as she sees it.

Her books include:

Heavenly Bodyguards – Trainee in Action (Volume one)
Heavenly Bodyguards – Against All Evil (Volume two)
Heavenly Bodyguards – Hurtful Conspiracy (Volume three)
Plane Crash – A Journey to the Heart

What sets your books apart from all others?

I write clean YA fiction/ Historical Fiction. I do have a unique style and stay true to it. I like to combine sub-genres in my stories because life has a little bit of everything. Every book will have a romance in it. I am just a big sucker for it, but it is clean/ swoon-worthy/ sweet and not steamy. My books have a religious tone to them, simply because I am very religious, and so there are either remarks and references about my own faith/ church or belief in God in general. I am not preachy or pushy, just informative, and it is part of who I am. I use many of my own traits for my main characters so I can relate to them better. As much as I love creating stories, they always carry certain messages with them. I try to address topics that are very real and that need to be addressed to raise awareness. I target abuse, human trafficking, bullying, sexual harassment, suicide attempts, staying true to yourself, modesty and chastity, and so on. Many of those topics are very important to me, and I want people to understand that talking about them is the only way to change.

Who is your target market, who should be reading your book?

My target market is everyone who likes reading Young Adult Fiction (teenagers and adults). Like I said above, I write clean fiction, not for a mature audience, and so anyone who enjoys Christian Fantasy, humor, romance, heartbreak, suspense, drama – would be a target audience. Although my books are fiction, I try to make them as real as possible. I research a lot when addressing certain issues, but I also want my characters to come across as authentic. I want them to be relatable. My trilogy is Christian Fantasy, but that is also written, so that could be true. I like to think of us as having guardian angels by our side.

What advice do you have to offer in support of other authors?

My advice for other authors would be: to never give up, support and help other authors in any way you can, and stay true to yourself. Most readers like your style and what you write; don’t change because there are a few who might disapprove of it. You will never please everyone. Most of my readers love the way I write, but I have come across a few who don’t seem to get my style, and so their responses are not very positive and encouraging. Although that hurts and is disheartening, focus on those, who support and admire you. As authors and readers, we don’t always like certain styles and genres ourselves, so stick with those who get you.

What is your genre of choice and why?

Because of my religious beliefs, I don’t write or read books geared toward a mature audience. I love romance, but I don’t like it when it goes into sexual details. Once a romance novel becomes written porn, I am not okay with it. I write YA fiction, Historical fiction, and Christian Fantasy because I want to offer more variety for those who prefer books as I do. I don’t write children’s books, but my novels are written that even teenagers (and perhaps older children) can safely read and enjoy them. I have a vivid imagination, so I don’t need sexual acts described to me. If I wanted to picture it, I could do that just fine without major details.

How’d you come about discovering your writing talent, gift or ability?

I always loved writing and creating stories. Escaping reality for a while and diving into a perfect world makes me happy. I also love acting, and to me, both things go hand in hand with my imagination. I am a dreamer and can picture things very vividly. Writing has always been my favorite way of expressing myself. My mom also writes, and so I think I got that from her. I believe I am pretty good at it because I love it.

Indie/Self-Published Author and/or Traditionally Published?  What do you favor more and why?

I tried the traditional publisher first as well as looking for agents. However, after a series of rejections, you get to the point of either wanting to give up or try a different approach. My first thought is usually to give up since it is so discouraging when nobody wants to give you a chance, but I am stubborn, and a go-getter, and my books mean a lot to me. I can’t just give up. I don’t want to get to a point in my life when I am disappointed in myself because I didn’t do everything I could. If, in the end, my dream doesn’t come true, at least I can say I tried everything in my power. So yeah, I am a self-published Indie Author, and I am now at a point of being grateful about it. Sure, the marketing part is a pain in the butt and super difficult, but I like that I can keep my stories my own and don’t feel like an editor has rewritten my story. I am who I am for a reason, and I want my books to be like that too. If you have a traditional publisher, that’s great, but I think as an Indie author, you learn to appreciate everything so much more because you had to work double so hard and fight for every little bit of success.

What have you sacrificed, if anything, to be a writer or to write as you do?  What have you gained from writing, how has it rewarded you personally?

I sacrificed time and other hobbies. It fulfills me, though, and it is a great feeling when you hear back from readers and they love your book. Writing a story is one thing; getting it out there and letting others read it is freaking scary, and you have to be brave to do it. Joining the Instagram book community was an amazing reward because I’ve met so many incredible authors and readers. I love to support other authors, making me happy when I see what we can accomplish together. My writing makes me happy, and it brings me joy when it makes other people happy too.
