Featured Author: Slate R. Raven

Slate R. Raven was born and raised primarily in Illinois, and started his writing career after attempting several other means of artistic expression. However, after a debilitating injury to his spine, Slate was left with the option of watching daytime television or finding something that proved to be more productive. So, with that said, Slate chose writing as a means of purging the turbulent emotions that coursed through his veins over being a prisoner of his own body.

The first of his many novels emerged while sitting under a Laptop computer, a generous gift from his father. To pass the time during the long months of surgery and physical therapy Slate continued to write novel after novel. After over a decade out of the business, Slate made the decision to go the Indie route and has recently returned to the publishing world.

At this time Slate has already published one novel with another in editing. Several others are waiting their turn for the editor, while another new work is underway. Keep an Eye out for his latest works. Who is your target market, who should be reading your books?

Anyone who enjoys great jaw-dropping twists and turns, and fantastic character development.

What advice do you have to offer in support of other authors?

Research every company with whom you do business. Go to the Better Business Bureau don’t just look at their rating, that isn’t accurate. Check their complaints, any financial ones are huge red flags. If they can’t control their finances should you trust them with yours? Check search engines, get samples of their work, talk to their former customers. Research each one of them with all due diligence!

What is your genre of choice and why?

Suspense/Thriller with a Paranormal twist. That’s my writing style although I do enjoy other genres, I just can’t seem to write those genres the way my favorite authors seem to do it.

How’d you come about discovery of your writing talent, gift or ability?

I hadn’t given it any real thought, even though I wrote as a kid. A friend named Dusty said to me while we shared a few beers under a streetlight on a curb near his house:

“You know something Slate; you tell our anecdotes with such detail and animation… you should really consider going into writing.” After my body betrayed me, and before I knew it would make something of a recovery, I dove head first into writing. I’ve never regretted making that choice, despite the unfortunate falling out we had between us.

Is writing for you synonymous with living and breathing, or just something you do as a hobby, and how so and why?

It’s like breathing. If I’m not writing, I’m thinking about writing, or marketing, or finding ways to improve my skills to provide my readers with the best material possible as I owe them nothing less.

What changes in the literary world would you most like to see?

I’d like to see more discretion in publication, just because a person can publish a novel there is the question of should they. Many people go to print without hiring professional editors, and the readers are the ones who lose in that position.

Indie/Self-Published Author and/or Traditionally Published?

Right now I’m staying the course with Independent Publishing, one day a publisher may gain my trust enough for me to place my work with them.

What’s the greatest compliment that you ever received regarding your literary accomplishments and what did this remark do for you, how did it transform your life or your writing?

I achieved a lot of wonderful things in the start of my writing career, before the publisher I was with was so terribly crooked. I think some of the angry letters about characters that were treated poorly, died, etc., showed me how much they loved and invested into my characters. I have had an overwhelming demand to write another Bloodworth novel.
